Personal background
My name is Marc. Orignially born in Rendesburg, Germany, I have been in Australia since I was 18 months old. I now live & work in Sydney in the IT field. Like a lot of people, I reckon I'm pretty smart but I haven't gotten around to changing the world or getting killed for trying just yet. Somehow the lure of suburbian mediocrity is just too strong.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home because I am convinced we're not alone and we should be trying to find what else is out there. Human beings can be quite smart individually, but put them into a group & we become a childish race; greedy and unconcerned enough about the long term future to do anything about it. Hey - hypocrite - that's me! Actually I think many people are disallusioned and confused and simply don't know what to do about global issues such as warming, polution and the unchecked rampant distruction of the life support systems that Earth has been so good as to provide. With a leader who wouldn't disappear or be made a fool of, mankind could make strides forward but we all know that isn't going to happen. It's a nice example of catch 22, really: leaders that would do something unpopular won't get voted in and yet it's the unpopular that needs doing. Cleaning up our planet. Finding and USING renewable and sustainable energy sources. Learning to terraform planets (hello Mars) & getting out into space. Feeding the starving peoples of the Earth. Forming a United Nations with real power that is governed by all, not just a few. That sort of idealistic garbage - you know (yes you do). Anyway, I analyse data for the SETI project because I know we're not alone in the universe but it would be nice to know for sure. Also an advanced lifeform might have a trick or two to teach us stoopid humans - maybe even have the power to prevent the few from harming the many. Sigh.
