Personal background

I live in Salem, Oregon. I am 49 years old and have been a computer consultant for the past 19 years. I work out of my home office and have a number of systems on a network that sit idle for periods of time. I thought it would be interesting to put them to some educational or scientific use in the off time.

I try to stay current with the latest gadgets and computer equipment without breaking my budget. Yes my grown kids think "Dad" is a computer geek. But that doesn't keep them from trying to go "shopping" (it's what they call it)for parts or computers in my office.

Even with all of this computer stuff, I have been interested in writing 50's style rock-n-roll music for the last 25 years. I play guitar, drums and can find my way (barely) around a piano keyboard. I have also been known to remodel or build a house or two.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

Considering the vastness of the universe, one cannot help but imagine there are other humans or animal species somewhere. If not, that makes our world and human life so sacred and special that to contemplate that meaning of life is just as great.

The sheer distances involved in the Universe almost preclude us from traveling very far without some breakthrough in propulsion technology or other forms of travel. Perhaps we have already been visited by much more advanced civilizations that cannot interrupt our "infancy". Or perhaps what is visiting us is far more sinister than can be comprehended by mankind.

I believe something is out there. We have evidence that past civilizations felt that way too. What it is and where it is, are the reasons we keep looking.

I'll do my small part as I am able.
