Personal background
I am a 40 year-old male from Springfield Ma. I was in the submarine service in the early 1980's and currently work as an Industrial Mechanic. I have a computer electronics background from the Navy, but I am relatively new the lastest equipment. If you were around in the 70's and 80's enough said. I am an Alcholic in recovery (Nov 00).This was the hardest and most fufilling thing I have ever done. Work keeps me pretty busy but I enjoy collecting rare coins, this computer, and doing anything outside in warm weather.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that anyone that believes that we are alone in this vast universe is either fooling themselves out of fear, or has a major ego going. I think that most ufo sighting are elaborate fakes, but considering the vast number of known stars I believe that the truth is, its closer to impossible that we are alone. I truly believe we must be one of many, maybe very rare, but surely not the only life in the galaxy. I really don't have a good guess about how or when we will discover life on another world. Barely 100 years ago nobody believed that man would fly, as a people we have come a long way in a relatively short time. I believe that they might find us first. Based on my knowledge and what I have read life on other worlds will be both less and more advanced than us. We can't seem to get along together here on our own world so I think there could be major changes if other intellegent life was found, and these changes might not be good. I believe that we would mis-treat a lesser evolved race or be mis-treated by a more evolved race. I have read about "so called" alien encounters, but have never read an encounter that was to mutual benifit of both parties envolved. I think if we send out a signal for others, and I believe we should, it should be a simple repeating pattern. This way it really means nothing and will only say that it is a man made signal. No one will try to figure out what it means other than that. No confusing long drawn out Hello we bla bla bla, that may not make sence to those who here it. I run SETI@home because I believe that we should find out the truth. I want to know if there is other intelligent life. Its more complicated than that but hard to put into words, when you go somewhere you have never been before do you not explore? My only suggestion is to keep it real (and in the hands of scholars and scientists) and share what is learned with all people of this world
