Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe in extraterrestrial life. I even believe in extraterrestrial intelligence. I don't believe we're ready to encounter it, but don't expect that we will even in our grandchildren's grandchildren's lifetimes.

Whether or not humans transmit a beacon for others to find is probably moot. Any signal sent using today's technology would most likely degrade too much to be of any use to distant intelligent life, assuming they even notice it.

Even though my views seem negative toward this project, I do believe it to be a worthwhile venture. If it so happened that intelligent extraterrestrials exist in our proximity, it would be quite a shame should we not make the opportunity to discover and contact them.
