Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1a. The possibilities of ET life can be low, when considering the number of worlds that could be like ours, and the evolution of the chemical processes that make up a living cell. But consider Carl Sagan's presentation in the Cosmos series where he placed elements in a glass container and exposed it to "lightning" (or as close as you can get in a lab) to produce components of amino acids. When considering that the building blocks of life are abundant, combined with the fact that living cells can survive in harsh Earth climates, the possibilities increase.

1b. Considering the time it takes signals to reach other worlds, combined with the small amount of time we've been transmitting / receiving, a discovery of ET life may not happen for decades.

1c. Benefits of discovering ET life include communication itself; look at what the printing press did for the world! Dangers include the disparities of classes; will this kind of discovery widen the disparities?

2. I think we should transmit a very simple beacon, one that is obviously artificial, possibly including a very simple message.

3. A friend at biomed.uakron.edu reminded me of the project recently and, combined with a link on the carlsagan.com site, I decided to join. There's an enourmous amount of CPU power that's "wasted" all over the world; why not put it to good use?
