| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Do I think there's life outside Earth? Absolutely. It's looking quite likely that simple life may even exist on other planets in our own solar system. Intelligent life may not be anywhere near us, but it's unbelievable that we're the only ones in the universe.
Should we initiate contact with them if we find them? Absolutely not, at least not without doing a lot of eavesdropping of our own. We are much too primitive and to think that all the spacefaring races are friendly is incredibly naive.
Do I think SETI@Home will find ET? Not really, though if the Parke system gets setup, it might help. But it's a fun project, and I think there will be interesting non-ET results, and I'm really pleased to see the project expanding to support other research projects. I hope it gets funding to continue --- this is a priceless resource and it would be a real crime to just throw it all away. |
