Personal background
For years I was an adrenalin junkie. I raced stock cars for a hobby and found other ways to push the edge of the envelope.
Now, much older and wiser, I try to look at the big picture. I have two great kids who will be fine citizens and will be my lasting legacy.
For fun now I run game servers, put up web sites, tackle first person shooters, launch model rockets and ride roller coasters.
I have travelled around the world and discovered that no matter where you go, people have the same basic concerns. Kids, education, shelter (dodging the tax man). I just wish more people had the opportunity to see beyond their own back yards, the world would be a better place.
I think any intelligent species would also have the same basic concerns, which will give us a common ground to start from.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'm in the Canadian Military, which has not precluded my belief that there is still intelligent life in the universe! I work in communications and every day use network tools, satellites and radio communications. To think that these tools are the special province of human beings seems a little arrogant. The distributed computing model of Seti@home has allowed the average person to be involved in the greatest quest humankind can embark on. I want to be involved, to be able to say I did my part!
