Profile: Christoph Gudenus

Personal background
I am a European of Austrian nationality, 53 years old, divorced, and have 3 children. I am an electrical engineer by training and am the founder and owner of a small company specializing in test- and measurement instruments for data communications. My hobbies are amateur astronomy, science fiction (collection of >200 books from Asimov to Zelezny), Vintage Cars (MG Midget '69 and MG TD '52) and my family (not necessarily in this order).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am sure that extra terrestrial life exists although I am not sure that we understand the whole breadth of what "life" means and what it could look like. I am also not sure that it would be "a good thing" if we found extra terrestrial life, or if it found us. But human nature will not let us sit around without trying to know what there is to know in the universe, in which we live. So SETI is a must, not an option.
SETI@home appeals to me, because it harnesses the capabilities of a large number of PCs into one whole effort and thus is also an excellent symbol for human ability to work together across national, geographical, cultural and political borders. SETI@home may be the first of a type of project in which this kind of concerted effort is the only possibility to solve a problem and thus we all may be taking part in a historical event, even if we do not find any extra terrestrial intelligence.
When I see our inability to abolish hunger, poverty and war on earth I sometimes wish there was more intra terrestrial intelligence around. Maybe we should found SITI@home
