Personal background
Name: Nik Aves
Age: 29
Location: Southsea, UK
Occupation: Baseband engineer for Nokia UK Ltd
Currently working on: Confidential until December 2001, it's worth waiting for!

Hobbies:
Just got the car converted to run on LPG(Autogas), one of my main time wasters
at the moment is keeping an up to date map for AutoRoute 2001 of all the LPG
Filling stations throughout the UK, if you live in the UK and you need LPG,
you'll know that there's only about 800 nationwide. The Overlay for AutoRoute
can be downloaded from my website www.lpgmap.co.uk FREE. I have about
100 users of this map so far, and between us we keep it pretty well up to date
and accurate. You'll also find GPS receivers for sale which contain up to date info on LPG stations throughout the UK.
Other hobbies include renevating a victorian 3 story house in Southsea,
MPEG1,2 & 4 encoding, computers (obviously), and 3 kids....I mean cats.
I used to work for Philips Semiconductors designing future copyprotection
for DVD (watermarking and wobble detection), interesting, but I needed a new
challenge after working there for 5 years.
By the way - The Photo, I'm the one on the right!!!!!

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
If E.T. is out there listening, then we've sent enough information for him
to find, in the form of TV broadcasts. I would imagine if they tuned in it
would be much like the film galaxy quest, who are they to tell the difference
between News and Soaps??
If the universe is infinately large, it makes sense that somewhere there
must be another solar system with life in it, if they are intelligent enough
to space travel then the chances are they're not going to come and irradicate
us all, why would they travel all those miles just to kill us???
I run SETI for two reasons.
1) The PCs at home are constantly on anyway for home security/server setup
2) If they're out there, I want to know in my lifetime. And anything I can
do to help, I will.
This is a fantastic project, it's a shame that more people don't run it.
The only thing that worries me about it is that if we do ever find E.T will
the we (the public) ever get to know about it? or will the governments of
this world keep it very quiet to avoid world wide panic.
You can imagine it, if they do exist world economics would collapse through the
very uncertain future that we will all be in...Something to think about!
