We must think of the first contact as more than just a benefit financial or other we must think of it as a race re born, we would realise that in all of that emptyness of space there are living breathing creatures who care, think, love and at the end die, (love and breathing being the best thing)
THis is who we are, why we are lies somewhere hidden in the dunes of time, waiting for the eons to pass before we descover it.
