Personal background
I am A Software Support Specialist at the University of Missouri - Coulmbia. I have been an employee there for the better part of 15 years. Have been a Seti@Home member for about 4 years. I've always been interested in astronomy AND extra terrestrial life AND compters, and this brings them all together. I am a divorcing father of 4 girls and have lived in Columbia for 25 years and in Missouri my entire life.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I am SURE life exists elsewhere in the galaxy, let alone the universe. It may not be like us, or ir may be very close. Regardless I am sure it is out there. I believe that the finding will be sudden and incontrovertible. When? I have no idea, but I surely hope I am around when we discover it. Benefits of meeting Extra Terrestrial Life (ETL) are boundless. Meeting new life and intelligence, gaining new knowledge of the universe and new equipment, starting a working relationship possibly with a new race of beings. The down side of that could be that we may not be READY for new technology, the new race may be warlike and conquering more than exploring, It could cause some fear throughout the world at the prospect of conquerors that are coming to take over the Earth.

2. Transmitting a beacon.... Hmmmmm Has good and bad points. Good that we may actually be found by other races and life forms. Could also be used as a beacon for Extra solar and galactic probes later. Bad side could be that we WOULD be easily found by MANY types of races. As to what we should transmit... General information. Too technical may never be seen as anything but gibberish. Maybe things similar to what we sent on the Voyager probes. They will be able to find us by following the beacon to source.

3. I run SETI@Home for the simple fact that I think it is cool to be a part of a search team that is looking for somethign I KNOW is out there. However small that part is, I still want to be a part. Who knows, one of MY analysis blocks may be the one that has the next race we find. That would be great!
