| Personal background |
Geek hobbyist from the upper midwest, though 9 years spent in Fairbanks, Alaska make Alaska 'home' for this family.
I have been building computers and tinkering wtih hardware, software, and firmware for more years than I can recall. I spent my grade school summer days at the local University playing games on old teletypes (we didn't have air-conditioning at home, and this was my escape to air-conditioned confort). Does 'xyzzy' mean anything to you?
I have SETI@home running on Linux, Mac, and Windows PCs, mostly older custom creations. I just hate to discard old computer systems when they still function.
I have a couple of old 486 computers running Linux to donate CPU cycles exclusively to the SETI project. A small price for me to pay in electricity costs to donate to the world of scientific research. |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Having grown up with a scientific research enthusiasm unbridled by formal schooling, religion, etc..., I am convinced that we are not alone in this vast universe we share. I tend towards thinking that we are less advanced than most other life from other galaxies. I also believe that the benefits of embracing other life in this universe far far outweigh any percieved risks we may face from other civilizations.
I run SETI@home to do my part donating CPU cycles and the cost of the electricity to further scientific research.
There was a time not too long ago when supercomputing cost many millions of dollars and specialized liquid-cooled systems to enable a fraction of the compute-power that the SETI@home project has harnessed. To be part of the first wide-spread distributed supercomputing effort brings a big smile to my face.
