Personal background
My name is Dustin Decker, and I am presently 31 years old. I live in the midwest, and work in information technology supporting that crappy line of products that Bill Gates and company market.

I'm a husband, father, and brother... I'm a friend to many. I'm a combat veteran. I enjoy fishing, geeking out on computers, and spending time with my family.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do I think extraterrestrial life exists?

That's a tough question. It's easy to cop out and use the standard phrase from "Contact", which is to say "It's an awful waste of space". Alas, I must confess that I'm from that camp that is interested in pure science minus any specific agenda. What I mean is that I am interested in the truth, and nothing but the truth... so what is that truth? For me, it is anything that can be stated as fact, and substantiated with emperical evidence. This means I don't subscribe to a belief in things like the big bang theory or evolution. To me, they are both proven incorrect by the laws of physics and/or mathmatical probability.
I guess the short answer is, I don't really know. I don't think there is enough evidence to support either claim (that there is/isn't intelligent life out there besides us) and would count it foolish not to consider the idea as at least a possiblility. Some of this gets muddied up for me too, considering my religious beliefs.

Why do I run SETI@home?

It beats the lameness of letting my unused cycles eat up electricity for no reason, and I can show off what little processing prowess I have.
