Personal background
I am a 1947 graduate of TAMU and got my master's degree in Mathematics. I taught math in public schools and college. I went to work for Dow Chemical in 1953 and in 1958 was one of 3 selected to start the Computer Services group. I worked at all levels in the department from programmer to manager. I retired from Dow in 1982 and became Manager of the Computer Center for Brazoria County in Angleton, Texas. I retired for good in 1987 and live the good life in Lake Jackson except for May to October which I spend at my summer home in Ridgway, Colorado. Most of my spare time is spent urging my kids, grandkids and greatgrandkids to become comupter geeks:-)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I joined the SETI@home project not too long ago. This is a wonderful project and I am glad to be a part of it. I have no idea if there is life beyond Earth. However, I do believe the possibility is very good that some form of life exists. Because the number of galaxies is almost infinite, I firmly believe that somewhere out there is intellegent life...possibly far more advanced than our young civilization. Whether we will ever contact any of them is remote due to the vastness of space. Should we then try? Absolutely. To me, science is not about practicality, but science is for the sake of science and knowledge itself.
I run SETI because because I am curious about ETI and who knows...I might become world famous because my computer was the first to discover that "HELLO" from somewhere out there:-)
