Profile: Walt

Personal background
I'm a Science Teacher in Riverside, California. I have many interests and a few passions.
A few are:

Space exploration
Evolution
Dinosaurs
Oceanliners
Scale Models (Mostly of spacecraft, oceanliners and dinosaurs)
I'm also obsessed with computers and the internet (I was on the ARPANET back in 1976, and have been on as much as possible since then)

I'm 46 years old, Deliriously happily married for the past 20 years. No kids. 5 cats.
We enjoy traveling, reading, cooking and sleeping in on weekends.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I think extraterrestrial life exists. The universe is a BIG place. As Carl Sagan said, if we are the only life it is a massive waste of space...

We will probably discover life when we get some sort of signal bleed from a broadcast. My guess is that we will probably need more sensitive equipment, and more time and energy devoted to the effort.

Are there benefits? Yes! Just knowing we are not alone will be a good start. Being able to exchange ideas, even at the distances and time involved would be a great boon to science!
Imagine learning the basic biology of a non-terrestrial ecosystem. It would expand our ideas about life so much!

Is there a risk? Well, not directly. ET isn't coming down to attack us, or lob missiles at us. I think the greatest danger is the philosophical difficulties that many would go through. Many religions are not set up to take life on other worlds into account, and many UFO nuts would begin getting more militant (Another Heaven's Gate would be likely).
No, we are enough of a threat to ourselves. We have nothing to fear from extraterrestrials.

Should we set up a beacon? Yes! I think that initially it should contain information that we can use as a bilingual with a receiving species. The periodic table should do nicely. Basic Math. Basic biological information discussing DNA, RNA and Protein synthesis. Maybe the Kreb's cycle. Other basic biological information. Of course, they may be watching Lucy and Your Show Of Shows already...

I run SETI@home because I think it is worthy. We have been collecting data from space for years. There are loads of data in the NASA archives that has not been inspected in detail. It would have been the greatest shame if a signal from an ET were sitting on a shelf somewhere, and we lacked the computer power to find it, when we had already collected it. Now, if we get the signal, it will not be hidden for long!

Suggestions? More dishes, more people, more computers, increased sensitivity. (I know, more money!)
