Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. yes
whenever we accept that we never will reach the end of knowledge and dont hide behind "god/gods" to explain what we should research - even if it takes thousands of years, then we might be ready to accept reality.
Typical evolution situation: if we (humans) are not ready (mentally and/or technologically)than the question will become: what will they do with us.

2. No risk, no gain
Whatever we send doesnt matter. If extraterrestrials get the message they will come and get us (for whatever pupose - friendly or not) if they can, or they cant, like us, and dream about getting (to)us - like we do.

3. Just to add my drop into the bucket - someday it might get full enough to get a result (and not only the dream/power trip of some individuals running the project.
Basically stupid - in 5 years our computing capacity will have increased so much, that in a few days all the work of past years can be done. But as this point will continue, any time is/was the best time to run the project.
