Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that there is life out there. We were wrong about the earth being the centre of the universe, and only time proved that lesson.

Humans are not ready as a culture to meet whats out there. While many of us would love to roam among the stars, everyone around the world discriminates to some degree...and unfortunately it seems to be the ones in power that would discriminate in the worst possible ways.

In some ways I do think we should transmit a beacon, just to say "Hi, where here!", but the more cautious side of me says to wait. We have sent out the voyager probes with meassages, and all well and good, but UFO sitings of the past have usually been met with some sort of Military encounter, in some of the more credible stories anyway. We dont have the power to protect ourselves, and it is pure human arrogance to think that anyone who has the technology to travel between the stars would be harmed or threatened by out defensive capabilities. We would fire first and screw it up for all.

I say we wait...just until we grow up.

I run seti@home because it is for a good cause. I would have been pretty hard to get the grants for the time on the telescope, and i dont need my computer every second of the day, so I help out and do my bit to make the Seti crew's hard work all the more gratifying for them. Ohhh...and of course for science :)
