With the shear numbers of star systems, I've got to believe that the odds of ET live forms approaches certainty. Personally I have trouble believing that WE will find them... think it far more likely that they will find us :)
Don't really think that there is any 'danger' to contact.. I would have a hard time believing the 'typical' alien mentality, would be that interested in US except from a curiosity point of view.
The benefits of contact, are obvious, and too varied to detail. Knowledge is key!!!
We should send a beacon: and the message should be "Help... I'm being held back by my ignorance" :)
