Personal background
I am a minister in the Baptist Church and director of a Jail and Prison Ministry
and publish its newsletter which is distributed to inmates. I also serve as a board member for a Texas not for profit corporation in addition
to a full time job with an attorney. A great deal of my time is pledged to my obligations in the ministry. My free time is spent enjoying music (a lot of which I have
downloaded from the internet so I can hear the great "oldies" I grew up with).
I also value the time I can spend with friends.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I really don't know if any other life exists except here on earth. As a minister
I understand that we have only been provided a history of the earth with no mention,
that I can find, to any other life form. So other life forms may exist or may not,
I just dont know. As far as benifits or dangers, we will never know if we don't
look for the answers. You ask, if we should transmit a beacon and what should we
send. There is no reason not to send a beacon and the truth in all things, is always
the best approach. As to why I decided to download the seti program, I first heard
of it on an episode of Jag a couple of months ago. One of the newsletters I
suscribe to had a link to the seti download page and to be truthfull, I downloaded
it because of the Jag program because I thought it was a responsible idea to put
a person's computer to work to explore the things we don't understand. I would
like to think God gave man the computer for something other than playing games...:-)
