"To survive, Humankind must inhabit more than one planet in more than one part of the Universe." (The Allen Ulimatum by Trebor Allen, 1997)
I am one of the world's oldest surviving hackers (from the era when a "hacker" was a company's greatest asset). I ran my first computer at age 17. It used hard wired programs and relays. Today, at age 61, I am a semi-retired consultant living in Southern California, USA. Most of my work is in Web Site design and Graphics/Video processing.
All of the computers here are home-built with a total of over one terabyte of disk storage.
I write science fiction stories in my free time under the name Trebor Allen. This past year has been spent remodeling my 55 year old home. |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
The strongest human instinct is survival. Humankind has perverted survival with culture, race, nationalism, gods, politics, and economics. This is the curse of intellect and our sentient nature. These are the "civilized" methods of survival competition.
Humankind must recognize and accept the laws of nature and the Universe. There is constant danger of destruction and extinction. On Earth, humans spread and adapted to every corner of the planet regardless of the dangers and environmental extremes. This was achieved in no more than a heartbeat in the life of the Universe.
We began as herbavours, evolved to onmivours, and today, we are Ultravours. We consume all of our planet. There are twice as many people on Earth than the planet can support. Nature will cull the Human herd. We must use our intellect to avoid disaster.
The Universe will one day make it impossible for Humans to survive on this planet. It may be a comet. Or, our sun may expire. The planet itself may change by our hand or by its own.
If we humans are to be more than an interesting and short chapter in the history of the Universe, we must spread our seed to other plaants. If possible, to all corners of the Universe.
Today, with SETI, we are observers. We are listening for others who may have realized their own vulnerability. We hope that we will hear from someone who has solved the puzzle of survival. We seek to be rescued before it is too late. But, survival requires action. Humankind must soon take actions. We must send our own beacon. We must see that survival is not a short term goal. We must begin to think is generations, hundreds and even thousands of generations. We must send signals in the hope that future generations will receive answers. We are listening for signals that may have originated before we walked this planet. We have the hope that someone, long ago, sent a message. But, what if everyone is listening and no one is transmitting? We listen to one, logical to us, samll part of the spectrum. If our logic does not equal the logic of the sender, we are deaf to their call. SETI must expand to more of the spectrum. SETI must send its own call to the Universe.
Humankind must accept reality. We can not survive on this planet forever. Our observations and intellect warn us that our planet could be destroyed with little or no warning. Humankind must have a single purpose. Humankind must survive and continue to evolve. We must gain more knowledge. We need time, not a million years but billions to achieve our potential. We must spread to other worlds to assure survival.
If you are reading this, you have an interest. I call to everyone to make Humankind's survival their life's work. Focus as much of your energy, career, and life as possible to that survival. Support space exploration in every way possible. Encourage risk taking. Those who explore may lose their lives to the dangers. The far greater danger is the loss of all human life. Not one of us can survive forever. But, Humankind can survive. We must take risks to assure the future of our species. We must invest in that future.
Humankind's history explains our nature. We are nomads. We are explorers. We have courage. We have curiosity. We are strong and enduring. Look back on those who walked months to reach unexplored lands. Think of those who sailed into the unknown to expand human range. We have populate every corner of this world. We have walked on the moon, placed our eyes on other planets in our solar system, and sent probes beyond the domain of our small sun.
If we had a space vehicle for a single family, how many thousands would try to reach another planet? How many would take the risks. Think about how many have done it in the past, loaded their belongings into boats, wagons, automobiles, and traveled into the unknown with little more than hopes, dreams and a sense of adventure.
We can do it. But, we must make it our life, our dedication, our passion. We must understand the need. We must see that the survival of Humankind is worth the sacrifices. Individuals will perish. Many have been lost in past expansions of Humankind. We must accept the facts. Earth cannot support us forever. Now is the time to seek other worlds.
Thank you for your time and attention.
