Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
While I believe that there is almost definately sentient life elsewhere in the universe, I must conceed that such life would have almost no method of reaching us here, and any signals we may catch will be so ancient any civilization which may have sent them is likely already long dead. I thusly believe that all alien sightings thus far are either fake or mistakes.
This brings to question why I am involved in any manner with SETI@Home. There are two reasons: First, there is always a chance the forementioned long-extinct civilization's signals alone could yield a final answer to whether or not there IS extraterrestrial life, even if it is too remote to communicate with, or that I am wrong and aliens have found some way to get past the limitations of our understanding of physics. Second, I enjoy the idea of using the internet and volunteers to form a vast computational device more powerful than any otherwise in existance, and joined mainly to be a part of such a construct.
