Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Extraterrestrial life should exist. Because (carbon based) life only requires 3 things:
1) Carbon
2) Liquid Water
3) Energy from for example a star

But if it's intelligent... evolution (which also should come with life) doesn't strive for intelligence. It's goal is optimal efficiency. We became intelligent because of coincidence. On our planet 1-5 lifeforms (Human, Neanderthal, bonobo, dolphin and elephant) out of ... (how many species would have existed since the dinosaurs?).

So while life will exist on every 1 out of 9 planets intelligence is far more unlikely. But since the universe is almost infinitely big intelligence should also exist.
But I don't think we'll encounter them in the near future. To visite them or have them visit us ways are needed to travel a distance of for example 1 lightyear in less than a year. (probarly done with space-time curving/shortening technologies - which should exist... if I find the URL I will add it here later).

But I do think we should try to contact them. Since neither of us has the technology nor resources to be any kind of a threat we should try. And I think that if life is detected on our planet the aliens would send radio-signals. So decode...
besides... letting my computer decode that stuff doesn't cost my anything. When my computer is constantly running I don't have to turn on my radiator to keep this room at a pleasant 288 degrees Kelvin.
