Personal background
I'm an American of northern European descent born in Seattle in 1959. Currently reside in Virginia with 2 feline companions and my partner Jim and I am employed as a computer network administrator. I began my college career at the University of Illinois as an Astronomy major - in high school I had the dream of becoming a xenobiologist - alas physics and I didn't get along very well, so I instead majored in Archaeology. I was young and education is a good thing. :-) I did have a fantastic course in Archeao-Astronomy. A few years later, after doing time as a fast food worker, I obtained my M.Ed. from the University of Louisville in Adult Education/Instructional Technology.
My hobbies include my Power Mac G4, creating art (digitally and with oil paints), landscaping, travelling, reading, and spending time with friends. Travelling is a great love of mine and partially fulfilled a dream of mine and spent 2 weeks (not nearly long enough) in Australia. However, the only animals I saw in the wild were cows, ducks, fruit bats and snakes. I did get to snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef and I would highly recommend that. In addition the Aussies are a very friendly and nice people.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1: Life is pervasive I beleive, the question should be does intelligent, comprehendable life exist outside our solar system. Again I like to think so. We are beginning to discover just how common planet formation is in our galaxy. I think we will discover XT signals just before we are ready to handle it; that seems to be the nature of science and philosophical progress in this era.
2: Should we transmit a beacon signal? Personally I don't think we should as I don't think we are culturally ready to be answered. We need to listen to the dark more, lurk in the shadows as our distant mammalian predecessors did (good survival technique). Granted we may not have that choice given the decades of EM transmissions from our planet.
3: I run SETI@home to be a part of the search, to be part of the new global community. I see this as a form of trans-national patriotism and the hunt for something bigger. Plus why waste computing resources ;-)
