Personal background
Married 57 year old male living near Fort Lauderdale Fl. Wife's (2nd) name is Cheryl. Two grown children and four grandchildren. Retired from Bell Telephone. I find I have always been fascinated by anything that has buttons and knobs and dials, the more the better. Inactive Ham Radio Operator, N4DMA. Some what crippled now with arthritis, but get around pretty good.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I think extraterrestrial life exists. As Jodie foster said in Contact, "If it doesn't it sure is a lot of wasted space."
Instead of us discovering it, it might discover us. I think right now we are somewhat like the man who dropped a dime in the middle of the block but searches for it at the end of the block where there is a street light. When asked why, he replies, "The light is better here." We need to be looking for the less exotic signal that might not have even been aimed at us, even if it his harder to find. There's probably a lot more of them.
If we should ever hear that faint cry from the dark, the civilization that originated it will be long gone by the time we realize they were there. This somewhat limits the REAL benefits, but just to know that we're not alone would still be the discovery ever.
