Personal background
I am a computer scientist that supports the US Army. I have been running Seti@Home on and off since 1999. I was attracted by the idea of using the vast untapped computing power of systems running screensavers from all over the world. I think this is a great idea, that is proving itself to be a great success.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I believe that there is other life in the Universe. Considering the size of the universe, it could be an indeterminable amount of time to verify this belief. I think that SETI is one of the best ways to pursue this effort, as it involves basic radio wave analysis principles to look for an organized radio signal to identify intelligence. It also garners the interest of a great number of people from all aspects of life, that have similar interests. I currently run the Seti@home software on three windows based servers (one AMD Athlon 1.7 Ghz, one AMD Quad-core Phenom CPU, and one AMD Dual-core +4800 CPU), two windows XP Pro systems (one AMD +3000 CPU, and one AMD +2500 CPU), and two Windows Media Edition XP (one AMD FX-60 Dual-core CPU and one AMD Dual-core +5200 CPU)systems. I am currently building a CentOS Linux system that will have a quad core processor and should add a little more horsepower to the effort.
