Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Seti.
Do you think extraterrestrial life exists?

Joseph Uzzell.
Yes I believe extraterestrial life exists.

Seti.
If so, when and how will humans discover it?

Joseph Uzzell.
There's no way to say with any certainty that we'll discover other life forms in the universe by any specific date. I don't foresee physical contact with sentient beings as the first form of contact between our two species. We'll "hear" them much sooner. Then we may trade interstellar toys before meeting face to face.

Seti.
What are the possible benefits and dangers of such a discovery?

Joseph Uzzell.

Pro. We enhance our civilization and theirs with an exchange of technology and ideologies that would lead to a greater understanding of ourselves and all other life forms.

Con. They show up the next day to eat us.

Seti.
Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find?

Joseph Uzzell.
Sure. The real question might turn out to be who's going to pay for the project? As it stands, I think we make enough radio noise presently to be detected, so it's just a metter of time before it reaches someone else.

Seti.
If so, what information should we send?

Joseph Uzzell.
I don't think it would really matter what information we sent. I firmly believe that an artificial and coherent signal from our rock would be as satisfying to them as it would be to us if we heard a signal from them, no matter how undecypherable it may be. The fact that it's there is enough to prove intelligent life exists somewhere other than here.

Seti.
Why do I run SETI@home?

Joseph Uzzell.
It's passive, and it's satisfying to know that time reserved to little worthless things floating around on the screen has become productive.

Seti.
What are my views about the project?

Joseph Uzzell.
I think you're right on target, but could always use more funding. I think the distributive computing platform is one of the most brilliant solutions you've had.

Seti.
Suggestions?

Joseph Uzzell.
Create different "skins" for the setiathome application.
