Personal background
Hi there, I'm Hans, born in 1964, living near Leuven, Belgium, Europe, Earth, Sun solar system inner planets, Milkyway, Universe, anything beyond that.
What I like : playing The Blues on my Statocaster , driving my Moto Guzzi California Special 1100, reading popular science literature and of course what I love most : my lovely wife Annick, and Charlotte and Laurens, our kids. We're the best team in the universe and its immediate surroundings.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
There's almost no chance that there is NO extraterrestrial life. Earth itself probably got "infected" with life from outer space a few billion years ago, maybe even more than once.
I don't think humans can ever populate the universe, but earthly (bacterial, viral, ...) life may spread as spores when sometime in future Earth may be shattered by a large comet or someting like that. These primitive life-forms may again develop into a similar plant- and animal world as we know it here, in case it finds a planet that is suited to support its development. That's probably what happened here on Earth anyway.
And it's a nice thought that somewhere in a little corner of the universe there are green ET-kids playing on orange grass while in another corner far away from there and here the age of the dinosaurs is happening all over again, or there are lifeforms somwhere whose composition we cannot even begin to imagine. Maybe one day we'll "hear" about them, if we just keep listening.
