Personal background
I spend a lot of time taking pictures and wandering around the countryside. Obviously, computers are also a hobby. I work as a technical support agent for HP. Nothing spectacular...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
To think that earth holds the only life form in the universe is positively ludicrous. That's not to say that all the other types are sentient beings, nor that they use any form of electromagnetic communication, but it's worth a shot, right? Science fiction aside, what keeps us alive could be fatal to them and vice versa...

Why do I run SETI@home? Three reasons;
a. It's fun, in a really low-key sort of way,
b. I want to help and the computer just sits here most of the time anyway, and
c. It lets me measure my computer against the public's average machine.

I see it as a sort of lottery; you can't win it if you're not in it. If we don't look we aren't likely to find anything. It could take years, decades or centuries, but someday there will be contact (again, perhaps?). It would be neat if it happened because of SETI.
