Personal background
I was born in the Netherlands and moved to Canada at the age of 8 months with my parents. As I grew up, my fathers interest in astronomy rubbed off and it was all I could do to digest as much info as possible on the topic. I became interested in the www.,about 4 years ago. I found a wealth of info on astronomy and also got interested in chatrooms. 2 years ago, I found who I consider to be my soulmate in one of those rooms. She Lives in the United States and came to meet me in Canada. I now reside with her in marriage in the U.S. We are extremely happy together. I just discovered this site not even a week ago and signed up eagerly.
As to my profession, I am an industrial painter by trade. My hobbies include astronomy, computer security, gardening and breeding small breed dogs (mix of chihuahua-tibetan spaniel-papillon). I also tinker with auto mechanics.
As of now, I am formally awaiting a responce to

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I would be naive to think that humans are the only race in the universe. As to how we may encounter other intelligent life out there, I believe that programs like Seti are probably our best bet. The vastness of space would make it unlikely that a chance physical encounter would be feasible, although I don't rule out that possibility. Sending signals is much more likely, since it covers much more territory than anything we could come up with in terms of transportation. The benefits involved would be enormous, in my opinion. The exchange of knowledge could only help all involved. Medicine, mechanics, society rules, and just knowledge in general would be multiplied to benefit the human race and any other for that matter. I can't see any feasible dangers involved with direct contact, other than malicious attempt by individuals, perhaps.
Yes, I think we should be sending out beacons for others to find. It would greatly increase the chances of contact. As for the information we send, I'm sure any intelligence would be able to figure out our place technologicaly and other info exchange would come upon mutual trust between the parties involved.
I run SETI because I fully believe in other intelligence and would like to contribute to the vast amount of data analysis needed to prove it. If everyone with a PC did that, just imagine the amount of said data that would be analyzed for everyone's benefit.
