Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes, as someone more important than me once said -- it's an awful waste of space if we are the only ones in it.
2. Might as well send a beacon, we've polluted the spectrum with all sorts of other signals; might try to send a coherent one. If they are "bad guys" they'll find us anyway (Independence Day) if they are good guys (Star Trek) then maybe the "Prime Directive" won't get in the way and they will help "save" this planet from our mismanagement, bad politics, and polution!
3. It's an awful waste of computing power just to let the desktops and laptops sit idle; this way they are doing something productive and it doesn't seem to affect the speed of the systems being used for SETI calculations.
