Personal background
Hi, I am head of R & D team at a small romanian company and member of a small team of WEB programmers called Aquaria (www.aquaria.ro). I live in Medias, a very small town in the center of Romania.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do NOT believe extraterestrial life exists, but I also didn't believe I would finish the university and other such things. I simply love to be proven wrong, especialy on my strongest principles (such as other life forms in the universe).
If, however, life is discovered in outerspace, it could prove to be benefical or not (just imagine discovering a conqueror race...). The odds to find ET are very small, and probably requires for ET to have found us already (much better odds) because of our exceptionaly limited understanding of the universe.
I do believe that humans should transmit a beacon, but without a message or with a simple "HELLO" or a sample of human DNA structure. If someone finds that beacon, they'll probably know what to do next (invade or help us). I run SETI@home because I know that other than gaming, there is almost no software that can use 100% of your CPU power, and so I run SETI@home all the time, even when I work @ my computer. Whoever had such a great ideea as to run this small program on computers around the world, should be awarded a medal or something (if the ideea wasn't stole from the movie "The Hacker" :) just joking). Realy great program and the graphical client is somehow cute for most of the users (those which do not understand about Doppler drift rates and such, like myself...).
Suggestions ? Only one: Advertise the program more.
