Profile: Joe Robertson

Personal background
I am a 55 year old male and proud father of one daughter and two grand children. Currently I work as a Lab technician in the field of Photography. I build and manage the computers with a small network and it's relation to all production equipment. I have worn several hats over the years. My carpentry skills are coming in handy restoring the first building to get electricity in Stevenson Washington. My partner and I live upstairs above a commercial tenant. I was formally trained in Photography by the US Navy in 1969 when Vietnam was running hot. This is when I started researching Roswell and Area 51 with serious fascination and interest. It's time to add a few more computer systems to my home Seti network.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I have always believed that extraterrestrial life is out there. I can not say or predict when and how we will discover it. I believe that through efforts like SETI and the use of Grid computing that discovery will happen way sooner than with out it. I also believe that the benefits far out weight the risks from contact with life outside of planet earth. The risks include bio-contamination and the introduction of diseases much like the smallpox we brought to the American Indigenous peoples in the early part of the 20th century. Through scientific precautions the risks can be minimized enough to pursue this search with minimal concern. I also believe we should send a radio beacon that consists of a historical time capsule that is updated on a periodic basis. If this information was complete enough regarding the nature of our species an intelligent life form might be aware before contact as to the possibility of contamination or incompatibility issues. I run SETI at home because I want to be part of a project that I believe can and likely will have a significant and positive effect on our life on this planet.
