Personal background |
I'm a Dutch biologist, 36 years old, female, with a PhD in evolutionary ecology, currently working at a Belgian university south-east of Brussels. My favorite pastimes are my work (really!), and the almost 300-year old house I bought a few months ago. To cover the seven kilometers between home and work I use my bike, which is quite a rare habit here. Ever rarer is the fact that I don't own a car. People usually don't think it's possible to live without one, so I feel like a missionary sometimes. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I am a member of the TidBITS team, the indispensable e-mail and web weekly for Macintosh users, and I'm also one of the Dutch TidBITS translators.
I don't think we will find extraterrestrial life, at least not of the kind we can communicate with. As a colleague of mine said: it's already hard enough to find intelligent life forms on earth, let alone in outer space. But being a scientist, I don't object lending my Macintosh G4's spare time to SETI@home. After all, you can only be sure that something doesn't exist if you have really looked for it. |
