Personal background
I am 39 years old and a licensed pharmacist. I own an independent pharmacy in Fairview,Michigan. I live in a VERY small town! I have been interested in astronomy and ET's for as long as I can remember. I believe there is other life out there and it's only a matter of time before first contact occurs. I consider myself a scientist first and foremost. A lot of people ask me that if I believe in life beyond Earth, how can I believe in a god? My reply is that God, by definition, IS an extra-terrestrial. For how can a being be from a place that He/She didn't create until after finishing the rest of the universe? My only regret is that I did not persue my dream of becoming an astronaut or an astronomer, but chose a profession with better opportunities for employment. I would like to encourage all those youngsters out there to follow their dreams because life is to long not to!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I've always believed that any race of beings capable of extra-solar communication and travel would be a benevolent one. My opinions on this matter were heavily influenced by the writings of Arthur C. Clarke, whom I consider to be the best science and science fiction writer of all time. We could benefit a great deal from ET. As an example, I have a 13 year old son who has autism. Perhaps a more advanced race of beings would have a treatment for this and other ailments from which we suffer. Not to mention the technological information they could share with us. The only down side I can imagine from contact with an alien species would be the cultural shock. I believe other, less advanced lifeforms live in our own solar system. I honestly believe there is life on Europa, although not of an intelligent variety. However, several marine species on our own planet display signs of intelligence, such as whales and dolphins. So perhaps some form of intelligent being has evolved in the deep oceans of Europa. I hope to see humans exploring this strange and wonderful place in my lifetime. I believe it is well worth the time, money and effort to explore these possibilities. I think SETI@home is a wonderful idea! It is a good way to involve the "common folk" like myself in what could possibly be the most important discovery in human history. I also believe we should be transmitting our own signal into space, altough I'm not sure what message it should contain except "Is there anybody out there?" (Quote from Pink Floyd). I run SETI@home not to become famous, but just to speed up the process of discovery. Every little bit helps, or should I say byte? And remember that truth is always stranger than fiction!
