Overview from a Big Apple blossom, swept on surprise winds to Second City....
Though cross-platform proficient, I only allow Macs in my residence. I began churning SETI data on my Performa 6116CD. It would take it around a week to plow through each data chunk. I think the strain of running it 'round the clock for SETI (I ran it as an ap, not a screen saver) contributed to its demise.
When the Performa turned into a money pit, it was replaced with an iMac G4. Many hardware problems existed. Shocked by the unseemly performance of an Apple product, I was afraid to continue the added strain of SETI. Indeed, I fretted over my inability to run SETI data, which was archived, but incomplete.
After roughly two-and-a-half years of battling with AppleCare over the G4's repeated hardware failures, it was exchanged for an iMac G5. And so, I returned to the SETI fold, harnessing the power of G5, to blast through data chunks, which now take between two to three hours to analyze -- a far cry from my steadfast, though snail-paced, Performa!

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Why do I do this? Because if Carl Sagan endorsed the notion of us not being the only populated planet in the universe, then who am I to refute the notion? I don't know if SETI is the answer to finding some distant neighbor, but at the chance that it will succeed, I am happy to donate some of my CPU time to the effort.
I have no clue if BONC is noticing my old, incomplete SETI data. This irks me! Investigation must ensue! No data block in my care shall go unnoticed!
