Profile: W.J. Kirby

Personal background
I live in southern Ohio. I've been married for over 19 years. I'm a self-employed woodworker and my wife is a district manager for a national steakhouse chain. We have no kids, but we do have a boxer puppy named Rudy. My interests include music (I have played guitar since I was 14), computers (earned a degree in programming in early 80's), woodworking (have been building things out of wood most of my life), astronomy (got my first telescope when I was about 10)and running (ran my first marathon last year).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that there is life in other places in our universe. Whether we ever find evidence of it is a question yet to be answered. Of course this life could be plant life or one celled organizism or even something like dinosaurs. Who knows, huh? What I don't believe in are UFO's and alien abductions. I think the idea that there are little bugged eyed creatures with the technology to travel the vast distance of space, find our little planet out of all the others out there, and find us interesting enough to stick around and probe on us a little bit hard to swallow.

I run Seti on my computers to help with the effort, with the hope that maybe, just maybe, we'll discover something. I think creating this global computer network of Seti users was a brilliant idea. I believe that humans would be changed forever if extraterrestrial life were ever discovered. And if we actually communicated with another lifeform, I can't even imagine what the reaction around the world would be. Personally, I would be completely awestuck.
