Profile: Charlie Chappelle

Personal background
I was born and raised in Ashland, Oregon, home of Southern Oregon State University and the Ashland Shakespearian Festival. Ashland’s probably the only place in the world where farm kids can recite Shakespeare on demand. I took a degree in nursing from Rogue Community College in 1973, and served as a combat medic with the Red Cross in Israel during the Yom Kippur War. I began matriculating at Portland State University in 1976 majoring in History, studied in London, but dropped out in 1979 to enlist with the U.S Coast Guard where I served as a navigator. After my honourable discharge in 1984 I served with the U.S. Merchant Marine in engineering until 1990 when I returned to PSU to graduate in 1991 with a BS in History. I attended graduate school briefly, majoring in History and Anthropology but had to leave school for lack of funds. After working in industry as a programmer in industrial automation, I am now back in school at Clark College here in Vancouver, Washington, majoring in Data Networking/Telecommunications. I am due to graduate in June, 2002, GO PENGUINS!
I’ll always go for the joke if that can be managed diplomatically. My musical taste runs from Aerosmith to Wagner, but I listen to my Grateful Dead records (yes, records) more than anything else. I also love British documentaries, dancing to the “oldies,” cooking, sailing on my sloop, S/V Moriah, writing short stories, and of course, playing with my computers.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that extraterrestrial life exists, and if what we find is only a microbe, such a discovery will change everything for the human race. At a stroke, biology will be de-provincialised; we won’t be so special anymore. What we shall do with such a discovery is anyone’s guess, but it will, undoubtedly cause great discombobulation among the humans on Earth. I hope I live long enough to see it.
