Personal background
My name is Caleb. I'm a sixteen year old resident in a city of about two million called Perth, the capital of Western Australia. I'm currently studying my eleventh year of high school, and hope to move into soundtracking as a career when I graduate. I enjoy a multitude of subjects, but my primary hobbies are collecting, listening to and writing music, programming and writing stories.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Do I beleive extraterrestrial life exists? Ofcourse I do! I have no doubts about it. When will humans discover it? I beleive that some of us already have, and for those that haven't - beleive that life exists. Unfortunately though, "first contact" of the public kind has not yet occured, and when it does, mixed reactions will probably arise. As for benefits and dangers.. I'd rather not make any haste thoughts until all the facts are known. Though, one certain benefit benefit will be to put all our ever curious minds at ease for the question which drives the search, "are we really alone". 2. Yes, ofcourse we should. The simple fact is, if we don't put out a beacon, there will be no beacon to find. Any information would do: Who we are, where we are, what music we like, whatever. It might sound silly, but essentially, a beacon is simply a signal to indicate we exist, and in that sense, as long as it's nothing that could bring us harm, any information would do. 3. I run SETI@Home for the same reasons that many others do - to aid the search. In one sense though, we are the ET to anyone else out there, and if they're searching for us, they've probably put a beacon out. Someone has to receive it. My views on the project are quite simple - I think it needs to be here, and I appreciate the effort put forward by the creator of SETI@Home for taking the initiative to start it.
