Personal background
55 year old guy who's been living on a different planet for a too long. Now that I've discovered Seti@home I'm back on Planet Earth in the UK and a member of TeAm AnandTech SETI :)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that extraterrestrial life must certainly exist elsewhere in the Universe. I doubt that humans on planet earth will ever discover other intelligent life forms due to the immense distances involved in the vastness of space, and the relatively short time span of our own and other galaxies. We may ourselves be unable to recognise advanced communications sent by others, but who knows? Such a genuine discovery may be frought with danger, but on the other hand, it may teach us a lot about ourselves and would surely teach us more about our wider environment. Where did we so called "humans" originate from? Did our ancestors themselves arrive from outer space and settle here? Transmitting beacons for others to find has to be a worthwhile and exciting venture, and as so many of us are now able to utilise our spare computing capacity, it becomes a far more viable exercise. However, some caution needs to be used in regard to the kind of information we send, although if we ever really do wish to make any kind of meaningful contact with extraterrestrial intelligent life, we need to be completely open and honest in the information we send about ourselves and our position in the Universe, otherwise it makes a nonsense of the whole operation. The risk attached in everything we do should not prevent us from at least trying our very best, as long as we trust in doing so for the good of mankind and "others". Just continue waving - they'll notice us eventually:)
