Personal background
ok so how'd i get here, well, a long time ago when i was 8 (22 years ago), i saw a picture of the planet saturn and asked my mom what it was. all she said was that it is another place like ours and maybe there are other people there. since then the quest for confirmation that there is other life, (intelegent or not) out in space has become a pre-occupation with me. born in port elizabeth south africa and still here, a design draughtman and amateur astronomer, the chance to take part in seti has been a chance of a lifetime for me. i'm married to my loving and forgiving wife ilana and we have a lil' baby boy matthew who is 15 months old. the movie, "contact" is my faverite and my worst subject at school was spelling!!!!!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
there has to be life out there. (well at least there had better be!!!) the thought of been alone in this universe is quite scary. if we have managed to evolve this far then by the law of averages there must be a similar species out there somewhere. we are relitivly young when it comes to the age of the universe so i feel that any race that we do find, (or the other way round) may be far more advanced than us, hopefully friendly and want to share their knowlage with us. my greatest worry is not about the intentions of the other species, but the reaction of the sometimes narrow minded people on this planet. the religous factor plays a big role here and what about the leaders of our nations? how will they react? will they see our newly discovered friends as a threat to them? with regards to the beacon, yes lets send one but we are limited by the speed of light. it takes 4.3 years to get to alpha centuri and many more years to get else where. any signal that we recieve from ou there may be hundreds or even thousands of years old. if an alien species has developed a faster mode of data transmission, then we won't know how to recieve it. they may realise that we still use rf to send signals so they will have to send a signal using there mode of data transmission and piggy back a rf signal to be launched towards us when it gets close enough. (just a few of my thoughts). i run seti@home because its what i'm interested in and i think the project is great, really great and i'm proud to be a part of it.
