Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The Universe is a large place, why should we think that we are the only ones in existance?

I feel that it's all just a matter of time before we locate at least some sign of life on another planet. Granted, with the speed of radio waves and the distance of the nearest potential solar system there's no guarantee that the other civilization even exists at this day and age.

I started running SETI at home because a friend of mine ran it. I wanted to pass his unit count and keep on going. Over time, I've also participated in other Distributed computing solutions including distributed.net, GRID, and several others. I feel that there's a whole lot of wasted computing power out there that could be put to much better use. We throw away millions of TeraFLOPS worth of computing power every year just because it's old. Think of the work that could be accomplished if all of that old PC power was put in a large HPC cluster. Granted, the whole thing would probably have to be set up under a shed in Fargo, ND just to save on AC costs but it would be something of epic proportions.
