Personal background
I am a relatively old computer geek (60) and have had computers as my hobby for over 30 years now. I am fascinated by space and the exploration of it. Since I probably will not be able to go in my lifetime I'm hoping we can at least establish that someone is out there. We would be awfully arrogant to believe that of all the worlds out there, this was the only one that developed intelligent life. I don't know if we've been visited or not, to many false claims to sort any real data out of it. I don't think the government is covering anything up, they can't even keep up with their laptops much less keep a secret like that. I run Seti@home on three computers now and hope to add another soon. To borrow a phrase from "The Thing from Outer Space", Keep watching the skies.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that extraterrestrial life does exist. I don't believe there coming all those light years to steal cows tounges. I think Seti@home or SETI in general is our best bet for discovering any intelligent life. When this will happen is anyones guess. Soon I hope. The benifits of such a discovery would be very limited at first due the vast distances involved. If they come here in ships first that would greatly increase the possiblitiy of benifits. I don't believe they are going to just start handing over technology, we'd probably kill ourselves if they did, but might start with some medical benifits or power generation. I believe any danger would be very limited, maybe a infection if we're not careful. I doubt they would be hostile.
I run Seti@home because I want to be a part of this project. This is the best and just about only shot we have at discovering what's really out there. As for sending a beacon out into space I believe we do that on a daily basis with all the AM radio traffic. This may be why they haven't came by yet! Maybe one of those morning talked shows bored them away.
