Profile: Ronald Crain

Personal background
I am a retired college professor living in Bartlesville, Oklahoma (USA). I taught Chemisty at McNeese State U. and Univeristy of Kansas and finished out my career teaching Computer Science. If you hear the word,"retire" in Oklahomese it would sound like, "Retard". Since I am past the time of retirement that would make me "Retarded" (past tense).

My twin brother (or womb mate) and I opened a computer store in Bartlesville in 1983. After five years of competing with a downward economy we sold the store and I went back to teaching (computer science).

My hobby is in digital photography and graphics. I have converted all of my parents slides, my wife's parents slides, and my slides along with scanned pictures into digital format. Thes pictures were then separated into folders by the year and CD ROMs were burned for our four children (and 16 grandchildren).

My consulting business in chemistry and computers is still providing me with some income (Enough to supply me with good digital equipment).

My remaining time is spent reading and assisting non-profit organisations with their computer and network problems. It is still fun.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The question of the existence of extraterrestial life is an interesting one. Statistically speaking, the odds are very high that there is life "out there" somewhere. The real question is whether we are far enough along to know what kind of signal we should be looking to find.

It seems to me that if you have to wait years and/or centuries to receive a signal you have a serious communication problem. There has to be a better way to get quicker communication.

On the other hand, it would also appear to be irrational to wait until we discover faster communication methods before we attempt to look for extraterrestial life. So, SETI is one possible hope of accomplishing this goal. We have to try and no one else has a better idea.

That is why I run SETI at home. I believe that the effort is well worth the time and resources. I am glad to be able to contribute my small bit to the research. Besides, what better way is there to make sure your computer is working properly before the warrenty runs out.
