Personal background
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Extra-terrestrial intelligence is a very interesting question. To paraphrase
Carl Sagan's characters in Contact, "It seems like an awful waste of
space if there's nobody else out there." (Combine that with my Christian
beliefs, and I'm no doubt a somewhat confusing person.)

SETI@Home is an interesting concept. I like the idea of giving the CPU
something useful to do while it waits for my keystroke. And the idea of
combinging "extra" CPU cycles world-wide to create the largest ever super-computer
is just incredibly clever. (I wish I'd thought of it!)

Of course, looking for a signal is only half the problem. If everybody
listens, and nobody ever asks, "Is there anybody out there?" then how can a
conversation start? It seems to me that just sending out a simple "1...4...9..."
and then listening for a "16" to come back would be a bit of progress.

Next question though is, are the ET's friendly? I hope so. The best way to
do it I suppose is to expect them to be friendly, but be prepared just in
case they aren't. Then again, given our own recent history on this ball of mud,
perhaps the ETs should be asking, "Are humans friendly?" I hope so.
