Profile: Spawrtan

Personal background
Retired Human Resources career executive in government, manufacturing, health care, and distribution industries; hobbies include flyfishing and Corvettes; active duty military service including 2 tours in Viet-Nam; undergraduate and graduate degrees from Michigan State, Michigan, and Keller Graduate School of Management. Recently returned from third tour of Viet-Nam, revisiting several old battlefields and having a few "special moments" where friends were injured or lost.

I have participated in SETI off and on for several years, mostly because I believe the possibility is too great that one day we will have contact with other living beings. There are too many billions of galaxies with their billions of stars for there not to be millions of habitable planets, some of which will probably support intelligent life.

One can always hope.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI is a neat way to help the search; I believe the universe is simply too vast for us to be the only life form; we just haven't found it yet. It is also too simplistic to assume that we are the most intelligent life form; we are probably the most intelligent life form we've met, but there are worlds we haven't even imagined, so we may be even more insignificant than we can imagine. I doubt we will discover viable life forms in my life time, but would like to see that happen, which is why I have participated in SETI.

Humans should continue radiating into space on a general basis; we wouldn't know where to send a focused beacon, but we should continue growing and exploring; if they are out there and want to make contact, they will.

We probably would scare truly intelligent lifeforms; humanity, politics aside, is very dangerous to other life forms. Like most living creatures, we want to protect our turf and kindred spirits against all "threats," so our territoriality, aggression, mating urges, etc., all combine to make us dangerous as individuals, societies, and nations. Any assertion to the contrary is naive and missing reality.

Keep SETI working and searching; I enjoy checking it and reading the site as it evolves. Great work.
