Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am and always have been facinated by the universe and the possibility that more than one lifeform has developed over the eons of existance. It is just a question of where and when other lifeforms developed, not if. SETI gives me a chance to contribute to the search for where and when others may be/have been.

As to benefits/dangers, they are obvious. Most religions on Earth are based upon our being the supereme beings in the universe. Findings others would shatter that fundamental belief. Other dangers would be if other beings exist and are superior to ourselves. Would that superiority bring dominance, presuming that they could come here? On the benefit side, perhaps they have conquored the petty problems that have made humans so violent toward each other and others. To be more advanced than us, they would have had to or else they would not survive long enough to become more advanced. They would be destroyed, just as we may end up destroying ourselves if we don't learn to live together more peacefully before we destroy ourselves. Anyone looking at the history of life here on Earth can't fail to see the acceleration of destruction of life that is occurring. Yes, dinosaurs are long gone, but they existed for 100 million years before their demise. Now there are forms of life that don't last 1000 years and man has been around for a blink of the eye relative to most other forms of life on earth. Yet man has evolved at a far greater rate that any other higher form of life in that short time.
