Personal background
I am a student at the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Cellular and Molecular Biology. Computers have always been a passion of mine, starting when I was four, when I was introduced to my father's TRS-80 computer. During the summers I have always worked part-time in a computer-related industry, ranging from well-established computer companies to startup high-tech firms to the average corporate environment (in the IS department).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I first became interested in April of 1999, when some friends at my high school started a group online and were officially endorsed by the school to install the client on the computers at the school. I, of course, joined in the fun, setting up an account for myself and running it on my P-90 at home. When I upgraded to a PII-400 and switch to CLI, it was running the faster than all Macs at school...that is, until the day my organization received funding for a G3....

I run SETI@home because I think that if I'd like to say "we're not alone" something should be done for the search. If the government does not want to fund such a search proactively, then the responsibility lies among the people. And I am one of the people!

As for ET: They are out there, and although we may never be able to communicate or even directly contact them, it is somewhat reassuring to know they're out there. The fate of the universe is not entirely in the hands of the human race.
