Profile: AL

Personal background
Hi, my name is Alan, though I prefer Al, I'm 23 and I live in a small village close to Sheffield in Northern England. I enjoy socialising, eating out, going to the cinema, bowling, swimming and visiting different countries whenever I can. I also enjoy climbing though I'm only a beginner.

I joined the seti@home experiment because I have always looked up at the stars and wondered if we are alone, I'm pretty sure we're not.

I seriously doubt it's even possible for an intelligent race to visit Earth but if they are out there then the chances are we'll eventually recieve some sort of signal, it would be really exciting if I could have something to do with that.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think it's almost certain that 'LIFE' exists all over the universe. Our own Solar system has at least three places, that I know of, where there is or was water (Earth, Mars & at the risk of sounding dumb I think Europa is an ice water moon?). So the odds of there being 'LIFE' out there are pretty good in my opinion.I'm not as enthusiastic that there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe but I think it's also quite possible, the only problem that I can see is that the lifespan of civilisations doesn't look too good, and the odds of two intelligent civilisations in the universe that will be around long enough to meet each other aren't as good. We may end up recieving signals from a civilisation that died millions of years ago, that would be extremely strange and exciting.
The benefits of discovering life elsewhere would be enormous, we could perhaps develop new technologies and power systems, we would have more faith in our survival as a species knowing we could live elsewhere in the universe and we would answer the ultimate question '' is there anyone out there?! ''
I think we should transmit a beacon showing our position in the universe, perhaps a simple message in binary or some other form of universal communication, perhaps drawing out a picture of a man and woman, that would be good fun.
I run seti@home because you need all the help you can get and I think it's great you're involving the world in this search, because ultimately that's what the discovery of alien life could achieve, world unification.
