Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
ET has to exist! Whether it is an ameoba or an intelligent life form is anybodys guess. When or how we discover it is another silly question, but I believe that SETI is on the most promising track.
I believe the greatest danger in discovering other life is from ourselves and how we deal with it. Going by our track record we will most probably show our worst side to them. On the other hand the benefits are unimaginably immense.
We have been transmitting a continuous beacon for the last hundred years and the information it contained is quite irretrievable. So maybe we could be a little more specific about it, but as to what to send? Your favorite Pina Colada recipe, the most likely know everything else.
My interest in this project is from several interests. I think the concept of distributed computing has awesome possibilities. But the chance for abuse is great. I mean what's to stop you from taking on contract jobs from corperations and slipping the odd extra algorithm into the code. I'm sure some advertising company somewhere would love to do a global market study. The possibilities are endless. Now that SETI has this in place and operating, what are they going to do with it when they get caught up and they don't need the full power of this amazing thing. I'm sure it wont be abandoned, so what's next? |
