Profile: LCDR Woxof

Personal background
I am a civilian employee of the U. S. Navy currently working at an experimental aircraft squadron, and a former Navy helicopter pilot. I have a bachelor's degree in engineering from Georgia Tech and a Master of Science in applied math from the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School. Yes, it's true, I am both a thrill-seeker AND a geek!

I have been running SETI@Home for about 3 years and was about to lose interest until I read about the related radio-astronomy work regarding the mapping of hydrogen in the universe and the search for collapsing black holes. Cool!

My personal theory is that technological civilizations go through 100 - 200 years using radio-frequency communications techniques before discovering something better; like gravity wave communication which would, theoretically, enable you to communicate instantaneously over any distance. I think that when we are able to develop the technology to monitor "faster" physical phenomena we will either discover that there are lots of advanced civilizations out there, or maybe none at all.

In the meantime, I still prefer watching the SETI@Home screen saver to the South Park 3D screen saver . . . .
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
See above.

I think there is some possibility that when we are discovered by other civilizations, one of them may decide to harvest us like shrimp. On the other hand, they might just decide to thin the herd and take the violent criminals, Somalis, lawyers, etc. (Okay, I can dream, can't I?)
